As an outsider, one of the characteristics of Italy that stands out is the variety of grand doorways. Big and small, wooden and steel, holy and residential, old and older, they often captivate the viewer. Locals are accustomed to their presence and may hardly notice most of them.
It isn't uncommon for a door itself to be covered with wood or plaster because of repurposing of the building, while the archway itself remains intact.
