MY HEART PANTS FOR YOU
1930s -1980s A Journey through the Other America
Mychelle Vincent X Hoist Contemporary – Milano.
Opening Wednesday, 19th February 2020 – 7pm-10pm
Hoist Contemporary - Via Giacosa, 37 20127 Milano
American photographer Mychelle Vincent shares her family archive: a massive collection of photos taken by her grandmother and by unknown authors that were locked away, kept for decades with care and journalistic dedication. A mirror of life and sociocultural transformations in 20th Century rural and suburban America.
High School students, young couples, army soldiers leaving for the Korean War, portrayals of intimacy within families and generations, not to mention the tragedy hit Sacramento Valley with the 1955 and 1986 floods. It’s a cross section of a common family’s everyday life, a journey starting in 1930s and ending in modern times. They are images that remind us of ‘The Americans’ by Robert Frank, James Dean – Rebel without a Cause, ‘70s, ’80s Kodak Colour Films, Back to the Future, Polaroids etc. It’s the 20th Century America of our collective imagination.

What started as a personal project to discover, preserve and share images from my own family’s photography collection grew into a journey of self-discovery and attracted the interest of others outside of my family and hometown.
