Photographs from USAC Viterbo field trip to
Civita di Bagnoregio
2015
Civita di Bagnoregio is an ancient city established by the Etruscans about 2,500 years ago. Today it is known an “la città che muore”, or “the dying city” because its foundation is endlessly crumbling. Its official population is only 16 people, although it is densely populated by cats, who definitely outnumber the humans.
The city is not well-known outside of Italy, so there is not a large international tourist crowd around. For students in the USAC Viterbo program, it is a known and necessary trip. It is a unique location in the world that I would really recommend stopping by if you are searching for a lesser known city in Italy.
