Calls for Full Disarmament on Anniversary of UN Nuclear Treaty

Calls for Full Disarmament on Anniversary of UN Nuclear Treaty
22 January 2022
MUNICH, Germany – Peace organizations and ICAN (International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons) groups joined together in Munich on January 22 to celebrate the first anniversary of the signing of the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. The demonstrators also were pushing for clear steps towards full disarmament in Germany.
The demonstration, which took place at Marienplatz, was attended by a relatively small group. Notably missing were youth protestors, a demographic which has been otherwise abundantly politically active in the city. This may be due to generational differences in perception of which political issues are most important in the world today.
There are now 59 states in the nuclear treaty, the first conference of the contracting states is planned for later this year. Although Germany does not possess any nuclear weapons, the United States keeps weapons in the country inside American military bases. Removal of those weapons was a focal point of the protest.
